Importing PuTTY sessions
PuTTY keeps its saved sessions in the Windows registry, one key per session, under
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SimonTatham\PuTTY\Sessions. A conversion script
ships with SmartCom Revisited that reads them and writes an import file.
Converting
- Run the conversion script from the SmartCom Revisited install directory.
- It reads your saved sessions and writes a single import file.
- In the app, import that file. Sessions arrive as connections, in a folder.
What comes across, and what does not
- Comes across: session name, host, port, protocol, username, serial port and line settings, and the terminal basics.
-
Does not: saved passwords — PuTTY does not store them, and neither
would we. Private keys stay where they are; point the connection at the same
.ppkor convert it to OpenSSH format.
If you keep sessions somewhere else
If you use the portable PuTTY that keeps sessions in a file rather than the registry,
or you have exported a .reg from another machine, point the script at that
file instead of reading the live registry.
Afterwards
Sort the imported connections into folders, then attach a button set. The exchange has sets for the usual platforms — read the script, download, import.
